Palm Sunday

In Christian churches Palm Sunday is marked by
holding holy service and
distribution of willow shoots (replacing the palm leaves) to the christians. Also today people whose names are in some way associated with flowers or trees celebrate Palm Sunday as their name day.
I like this little, lovely church "Sv. Nikolaj" in "Kalojan" street. You are entering in a gallery, having a magnificent view to the space below with the altar.

Today Christians in Bulgaria celebrate Palm Sunday, the last Sunday of Lent before Easter.
One of the folklore traditions on this day is the custom to weave circlets out of willow shoots, which replace the palms from the biblical tradition. The circlets are worn either on head or wrists and later hung on doors.
People whose names are in some way associated with flowers or trees celebrates Palm Sunday as their name day.
I like the shining smile of this gipsy boy, who was selling willow shoots and flowers near "Al. Nevski" Cathedral.

This is the end of the "marteniza" story for this year. The tradition says that you have to wear it from 1st of March until you see the first stork or tree in bloom. I'm not sure how many storks are in Sofia now, but trees with tied martenizi in to their branches are everywhere around!

For the day of Baba Marta - the 1st of March we have a tradition to exchange white and red threads for good health during the year.
The legend says that the martenitza protects the people and the household from the evil spirit of the winter.
Some people makes the Martenitzi for their families and friends themself, but others prefere to bye them. Now, the last weekend before 1st of March the streets are full of young and old people selling martenitzi, different outlook, according the phantasy of the creators, but on the basis of red and white threads.
