The first radius of Sofia subway from "Obelja" to the city center was opened in year 2000. Now the radius is growing to diameter - from the center to "Mladost" district. This is one of the new stations - still construction site, expected to become operational in the spring 2009.

the ghost cinema

In the second war period was build the “zaharna fabrica (sugar factory)” residential area for the workers and employees in the industry, using the rich social insurance fund. The buildings are simple and uniform. On one of this buildings I find the Cinema board, obviously brought for years from Germany, with the description “Gespenster, Krimi Kino” (ghost, crime cinema).

sugar houses 2

In a strategic position (close to the bridge over the railway), but hiding in wild vegetation you could discover the police station house. I like specially the nice flowerpots on the windows!

Close to the sugar factory and the railway line is a small residential part with a strange “out of time” atmosphere. Some of the houses are in very bad condition, some not, but the vegetation and the pavements (where there are any) in between remained obviously from years untouched.

This inner court faces the railway (now it is a fence, of course), but it could be the perfect place for “trainspoting” with a long drink in the hand.

the sugar factory

The sugar factory, build in 1898, was the biggest enterprise in Bulgaria in the beginning of the 20th century, established by Solvay Belgium. Now the district around is called "Zaharna fabrika" (sugar factory), but the building itself is gone to ruin. Parts of it are still used as stores, parts are fully destroyed.
Although I like the building and the area around it very much, the place has a special artistic magnetism. Hopefully like other cities, which have revitalized such areas, Sofia will have an Sugar-Art factory one day.

No parking

Actually I couldn’t find any “NO” signs worth picturing in Sofia.
It happens I have been in the area of "Zaharna fabrica", and this entrance, where is written "NO PARKING" is from there.
I'll post the next days pictures from the site and write a little bit more.
